In our previous topic of WordPress, we took an Overview of WordPress Dashboard. Now, in today’s tutorial, you will learn How you can Install WordPress Plugin. We will discuss three different ways for uploading; activating WordPress plugins which will be helpful for you.

The first way will help you learn how you can install WordPress plugin directly from WordPress Plugins Library; the second way will guide you through the manual installation of WordPress plugin by uploading it from WP dashboard, and the third way will guide you through the manual installation by using FTP method.

What are WordPress Plugins?

In WordPress, plugins extend the functionality of your WordPress website. You can make e-commerce stores; communities; and do much more using WordPress Plugins functionality.

There are tons of plugins available for WordPress; which can be used to extend functionality in different ways of your WordPress website. You will find some for free and some for money.

How to Install WordPress Plugin?

For installation of WordPress Plugin, we had discussed three methods. Below you can find three methods with all the steps.

1 1st Method – WordPress Plugins Library

1st Method – WordPress Plugins Library

In this method, you will learn how you can install WordPress Plugin from WordPress Library.

  1. Open Dashboard (Admin Area) of your WordPress site.
  2. Log in to it.
  3. Navigate to “Plugins > Add New”.
  4. Search for your preferred plugin.
  5. Click on the “Install Now” button next to your preferred plugin name.
  6. Click on the “Activate” button after installation of a plugin.

After following steps mentioned above, your preferred plugin will be installed & activated successfully.

2 2nd Method – Manual Installation from Dashboard

2nd Method – Manual Installation from Dashboard

In this method, you will learn how you can install plugins downloaded from the third-party marketplace.

  1. Search for your preferred plugin on the third-party marketplace.
  2. Download it.
  3. Check the download zip file whether it contains main plugin files or not.
  4. If it contains main plugin files then continue with step 9.
  5. If it doesn’t contain main plugin files then extract it.
  6. Locate the main plugins files (plugin-folder or plugin-name.zip).
  7. If the main plugin files are in .zip file containing plugin-folder with files then continue with step 9.
  8. If the main plugin files are in plugin-folder then compress the plugin-folder into .zip file.
  9. Open the WordPress Dashboard.
  10. Navigate to “Plugins > Add New”.
  11. Click on the “Upload Plugin” button.
  12. Click on the “Choose Files” button.
  13. Select the .zip file containing the main plugin folder with files.
  14. Click on the “Install Now” button.
  15. After, completion of installation clicks on the “Activate” button.

After following steps mentioned above, your preferred plugin will be installed & activated successfully.

3 3rd Method – Installation from FTP or File Manager

3rd Method – Installation from FTP or File Manager

In this method, you will learn how you can install plugins downloaded from the third party using FTP or File Manager.

  1. Search for your preferred plugin on the third-party marketplace.
  2. Download it.
  3. Check the download zip file whether it contains main plugin files or not.
  4. If it contains main plugin files then continue with step 9.
  5. If it doesn’t contain main plugin files then extract it.
  6. Locate the main plugins files (plugin-folder or plugin-name.zip).
  7. If the main plugin files are in .zip file containing plugin-folder with files then continue with step 9.
  8. If the main plugin files are in plugin-folder then compress the plugin-folder into .zip file.
  9. Login to Control Panel of your website or Connect using FTP.
  10. If using FTP then continue with step 12.
  11. If using Control Panel, then click on the file manager.
  12. Navigate to the directory of your site e.g. public_html.
  13. Now, navigate to “wp-content/plugins”.
  14. Click on the Upload button.
  15. Select the .zip file containing the main plugin folder with files.
  16. After uploading, return to “public_html/wp-content/plugins”.
  17. Extract the upload .zip file.
  18. Now, open WordPress Dashboard.
  19. Navigate to “Plugins > Installed Plugins”.
  20. Search for the plugin you just installed.
  21. Click on the “Activate” button.

After following steps mentioned above, your preferred plugin will be installed & activated successfully.
